It was the same then as it is today, most people were right handed. If you look at painting of shield walls, phalanxes or any sort for formation you will see that the men always had their shields on their left arm at weapons on their right, because they were right handed. The weak point of a phalanx was the left flank, because you were completely exposed since your shield was covering the man to your right.
Tldr: drawing is inaccurate
